NPC prepares no confidence motion after NPA publishes report on cost of security operations in Tigellêah

SANKTA HELENO, Jan 6 – The National People’s Council (NPC) is preparing to debate a motion of no confidence following the publication of a National Planning Agency (NPA) report detailing the financial cost of ongoing security operations in Tigellêah.

A draft of the motion alleges that the Presiding Officer of the NPC, Jacob Hassan, and the Commissioner for Security, Aaron Moran, acted outside the constitutional bounds of their offices and misled the Council regarding the nature and scope of the deployment.

The move follows the NPA’s release of its cost assessment of the People’s Security Committee’s (PSC) operation in Tigellêah, which indicates that the deployment has cost the equivalent of £629.93 GBP, representing 10.77% of national GDP, since it began six days ago.

According to the report, the initial deployment of the People’s Security Naval Force on New Year’s Eve accounted for £51.50 of the total cost. The remaining expenditure is attributed to the formation and deployment of a militia, a measure that was approved by a vote of the NPC.

In response, the PSC defended the expenditure, stating: “The majority of the cost incurred was due to the expense of forming a militia, as voted for by the National People’s Council. This expenditure reflects the unavoidable costs of establishing, for the first time, a controlled and accountable security capacity.”

The motion represents the first time the constitutional mechanism of a no-confidence vote has been invoked in the Republic. The outcome will not be known until the conclusion of the NPC’s weekly sitting at 18:00 GMT tomorrow.

Separately, the Community Safety and Justice Service (CSJS) has confirmed that it has received a complaint alleging criminal activity in relation to the actions of Hassan and Moran. An investigation has been formally opened.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, Daisy Morgan, returned to Sankta Heleno this evening following three days of talks with King Boniface of Tigellêah. She is expected to brief the NPC on the substance of those discussions during tomorrow’s sitting.
